Board Decision: On October 5, 2024, the board of directors meeting resolved to adopt the following proposals:

The 2024 Annual Membership Meeting of the SCARBOROUGH SENIOR CHINESE DRAMATIC ASSOCIATION (SSCDA) and the 2025 Director Election are scheduled to be held at the SSCDA from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on December 14 this year (Saturday).

I) Annual General Meeting:

Voting on the proposal to amend the board of directors - the election of directors will be changed to once every two years, and they can be re-elected. However, each director cannot hold the same position for more than four years, and the position of president cannot exceed two years. The proposal will take effect immediately after it is passed.

II) Director election:

1) The director election uses nomination method to determine the list of director candidates;

2) Only the original nomination form and authorization letter will be accepted, photocopies or email versions will not be accepted;

3) The nomination letter and authorization letter must be delivered to the SCARBOROUGH SENIOR CHINESE DRAMATIC ASSOCIATION (SSCDA) before 5:00 pm on November 20, 2024 (Wednesday), and will be invalid after the deadline;

4) The 2025 director election will be conducted by members attending the annual general meeting to vote on-site to elect 15 elected directors, and the results will be announced by the election committee on-site counting on the day of the election;

5) Attached is the nomination letter and authorization letter for the 2025 director election.

[According to the regulations of this Association, associate members (members who have joined the membership for less than one year) or members under the age of 50 only have the right to be elected but not to vote]

Scarborough Senior Chinese Dramatic Association

The SCARBOROUGH SENIOR CHINESE DRAMATIC ASSOCIATION (SSCDA) is affiliated with SCARBOROUGH SENIOR CHINESE ASSOCIATION (SSCA). The Cantonese music group (CMG) was initiated in 1983 by former SSCA directors: Cheng Chung-Chau, Wong Wai-Choi, Lo Hon-chung, Chan Wai-Yee and Leung Mai-Bo. In 1984, due to rapid membership increases, the CMG was re-structured and re-named as SSCDA. The mission of the SSCDA was, and continues to be, the practice and promotion of traditional Cantonese Opera culture, and shares its services with Toronto’s Chinese community. SSCDA members have actively participated in Cantonese Opera activities and performances since 1984. Over several decades the association has earned a stellar reputation within Toronto’s Cantonese Opera and Chinese communities. Many distinguished Cantonese Opera performers and Cantonese music masters have participated in SSCDA activities and performances in their initial arrival in Toronto, including community fund-raising and charity performances. In recognition of its decades of cultural service, the SSCDA has been hailed in the Cantonese opera circle as the “Toronto Cantonese Opera Shaolin Temple”.

Since 2013, in response to changing times and the desire of Cantonese Opera lovers, SSCDA has restructured its operations to be grounded upon: the principles of economy, convenience, popularization and diversification of activities, while administering association affairs and activities in an efficient and effective management style. It is also tasked with providing high-quality event venues to gather Cantonese Opera lovers, to facilitate regular rehearsals for members, to exchange and to enhance friendship, and to broaden social circles whilst enriching leisure activities after work or after retirement.

SSCDA has close to two hundred members. On-going day-to-day administration is the responsibility of more than 20 directors, committee members and assistants. Ms.Yuen Mei, the famous Cantonese Opera composer, serves as SSCDA’s Honorary Artistic Advisor. She works with our association to consolidate the foundations established by the associaton’s predecessors. SSCDA has been working diligently to improve its equipment infrastructure for Cantonese Opera practices and performance activities, and to strengthen external communications in order to promote and to preserve the cultural heritage of traditional Cantonese Opera.

SSCDA, located on the SSCA’s property at 27 Milliken Blvd D2, Scarborough , is designed to accommodate performance and event venues. The association provides event staging, professional lighting and sound equipment. Our venue can accommodate 100 audience/attendees for the enjoyment of cultural celebrations and performances. Annual large-scale activities include: Spring Festival Gala, Mid-Autumn Festival, Wah-Gong (Cantonese Opera God) Festival, and other major performance activities. SSCDA operates in partnership with friends and associates in various lectures and/or workshops. Regular monthly activities include: Cantonese Opera Karaoke, Cantonese Opera practice with live music, Cantonese Opera practice with master musicians, and Yuen Mei Cantonese Opera Libretto Workshops. These activities are held for Cantonese Opera lovers and members of SSCDA. They are ideal venue for Cantonese Opera lovers to listen, to learn, to appreciate Cantonese Opera music and to meet others with whom cultural activities and Cantonese Opera performances may be cooperatively shared and enjoyed.
